Democracy v Demagoguery

The current state of affairs is dire.  We are witnessing the end of true democracy, facilitated by virtue of its processes.

I will begin by saying I did 'Feel the Bern'---I fully supported the candidacy of Bernie Sanders, and still do support his efforts.  Our founding fathers determined that public policy and protections are not to be sold to the highest bidder.  Yet, we have slowly, almost imperceptibly, replaced democracy with plutocracy.  We are now moving into tyranny, as our new President effects more authoritarian policies with each passing week, slowly removing our civil liberties, in the name of 'national security'.  In the words of one of our founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin: "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both."

This move toward complete state control did not begin with Donald Trump, but I fear it will end with him.  The definition of a demagogue: 'A leader in a democracy who gains popularity by exploiting prejudice and ignorance among the common people, whipping up the passions of the crowd and shutting down reasoned deliberation.'  This perfectly describes the actions we have already seen by Trump.  It also perfectly describes Hitler, though he carried it a step further, into dictatorship.  I fear for the future of the United States of America.  My only hope, is that the tyrannical actions of Trump will bring about the complete overhaul of our current governing bodies, which is desperately needed, to restore its original purpose--to be a government OF the people, BY the people, and FOR the people.

There is a proposal for the secession of California from the union.  I am told this is a Russian - Republican construct, to make the U.S. a wholly Republican state, as the loss of Democratic California, with the current electoral college and restrictive 2-party system maintained in place, would ensure that the Republican party wins every race, as much of middle America is Republican, and the Republicans will rule forever, essentially unchallenged.  I am told this is bad for America.  But, I only want what is good for me and mine.  My jury is still out on this issue, dependent upon the logistics and viability of the transfer of power.
